Location On the 12th December 1553, Henri II rubbed a clove of garlic on the lips of a new born, the future King Henri IV, and wetted them with a drop of the famous Jurançon wine. To discover the different stages in the making of this reputed wine, come to the yearly open day in mid-July at the Jurançon Cooperative between Pau and Gan. Visits From wine production in the modern, entirely tiled building to bottling in the sterile room, and the visit of the magnificent fermenting and ageing room, located half underground and with a Gallo-Roman mosaic from the 4th and 5th centuries, you will discover every stage in the production of Jurançon. Your visit will finish, as is fitting, with a tasting of the wines from the appellation and regional products. Don’t forget to nip into the Jurançon producers’shop, just next to the winery.

Location
On the hillsides opposite the Pic du Midi d’Ossau, the Jurançon vineyards stretch for about forty kilometres between Pau and Oloron-Sainte-Marie. At the initiative of the Jurançon Maison des Vins, wine producers, craftspeople, farmers and artists welcome you each year on the second Sunday in December to Lacommande and Monein.
Atmosphere
The Jurançon Open Days mark an end to the harvest festivals that start in September. It is the ideal opportunity to enter into the wine storerooms and taste the white wine, dry or sweet, the ideal companion for meat or foie gras. Jurançon are blended wines made from many different grape varieties: Petit and Gros Manseng, Courbu, Camaralet and Lauzet. Depending on the area and the year, the wine grower chooses the grapes for the wine and it is this that characterises his wine. As well as the visits to the wine store rooms, exhibitions, songs and a variety of concerts are on offer all day long on this enjoyable day.

For the last 15 years the winegrowers on the Jurançon Wine Route and their guests have brought autumn to life with three months of festivity and cultural effervescence combining concerts, exhibitions, tastings and various encounters.
And of course there is always Open Day on Sunday 9 December, when the winegrowers await you in the villages of the appellation, along with artists and craftspeople.
Make the most of the occasion to see the surrounding area with a break in the Béarn region. There is plenty of choice in the selection of guest houses at Monein Tourist Office.
Lastly, worthy of note: this festival won the 2011 French Wine Tourism Prize in the ‘organisation of vineyard events’ category.
