In the 18th century, the estate belonged to M. Barbe, chief of the stronghold and controller of the banks of the Dordogne. The Directoire manor house was built after the French Revolution. At the end of the 19th century, the estate was devastated by phylloxera and was subsequently sold to the Carreau family who reconditioned and still manage the estate today. The wine produced from the vines at Château Barbé is a deep ruby red colour, with a slight liquorice aroma, and a powerful, smooth flavour. This distinctive wine ages well and is frequently awarded in wine tastings.
