Nestled in a lovely half-timbered house in the centre of Bergerac, the little Museum of Bergerac wine, boat transport and cooperage now has one of the finest collections of objects related to river transport in the Dordogne.
Worth seeing
Imagine the boat activity of the river in its heydey, thanks to the objects, photos and models of "gabares", the flat-bottomed boats which transported wine on the Dordogne. Because there are hardly any reamins of the era. When the business came to an end in 1925, certain boatmen sold off the hulls of their now-useless boats very cheaply, while others simply burned their boats. Thanks to this museum, the wine trade in Périgord will come alive for you, as will the activity of coopers.
