In this part of the region, on the edge of the Landes, Gers and Pyrénées-Atlantiques areas, one of the appellations has kepts it Gascon name, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh, in which Vic-Bilh means "old country". This white is still made in part with a rare native variety, the arrufiac. The red is Madiran, with tannat, cabernet and fer-servadou. Perfect with the Béarn specialities, but before eating remember to remove your beret, which originates from Béarn, apparently.
Nature is omnipresent here and lends itself well to walks, horse-rides or bike trips. There are several circuits to discover the local architecture, for example Bellegarde Mill in Lespielle, dating back to the 14th century and where corn is still milled! There are lakes for anglers and wild orchids for admirers in springtime.
In Crouseilles, the castle is also the headquarters of the cooperative winery, a good source of information, in particular for ideas for breaks or excursions. Mascaraàs Castle is home to one of the region’s biggest decorative ensembles, including Béarn furniture, and you can admire the Pyrenees from the grounds. The more ancient Arricau-Bordes Castle is private and unfortunately not open to the public, but the garden can be visited on Heritage Days.
Aside from the Garlin arenas, the summer season sees temporary arenas for the novilladas and course landaise spectacles. Other farms are open for visits and sell their authentic farmhouse produce. An original farm is the one that rears snails and offers educational visits.
