You are here: Haute-Gironde / Blaye

You can admire the finest sunsets in Gironde from the Route de la Corniche, between Bourg and Blaye. Vauban’s citadel harmoniously - almost magically - combines nature with old stone, offering a panoramic view over Europe’s largest estuary. Bourg and its port are a reminder of the ocean 70 km away. The vines stretch as far as Saint-Ciers-sur-Gironde, producing côtes-de-blaye, côtes-de-bourg and premières-côtes-de-blaye.

Excursions

You can obviously visit the region as you please - on foot, by bike or on horseback - but it’s worth knowing that the Bourg-sur-Gironde Tourist Office proposes 3 itineraries to follow, accompanied by an audioguide. In summer you can also discover the estuary by canoe, leaving from Blaye. A sight to behold.

Prehistory and Gallo-Roman times

Both these eras are represented at sites here. The prehistoric cave of Pair-non-Pair is one of the oldest decorated caves. These sculptures on the rocky curves, glimpsed through a ray of sunlight, are simply stunning! Not far away, in Plassac, the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa and its museum are a reminder of the presence of the Romans throughout the region. And it was the Romans who first introduced vine-growing here. We owe them our gratitude!

Aperitif

Next you are invited aboard La Ginette, the most convivial boat in the West. On this boat you sail off in discovery of the estuary’s islands, and at noon an aperitif is served. La Ginette is one of the partners of Gens d’Estuaire, a grouping of service providers who invite you to look at their region from a different angle.

Theatre

In 2009 the Blaye and Estuary Theatre Festival is celebrating its 20th edition. It takes place in late August each year and offers a wide range of contemporary theatrical creations. Other festivities liven up the Haute-Gironde area over the seasons: Jumping de Blaye, marathon, asparagus fête (the region’s key product), the harvest festival and the open days at the wine estates. Come and meet them!
