Entre-deux-Mers ("between two seas") is the name given to this territory bordered to the north by the Dordogne River and the south by the Garonne River. Although they are 75 km from the ocean, these two rivers are nonetheless tidal. The "mascaret" is the name for the tidal bore, a wave formed at the rivermouth which moves more than 100 km upriver. When it comes, many people like to surf it, for example in Saint-Pardon.
The Entre-deux-Mers is the biggest wine region in Aquitaine. The vines here produce the famous dry whites, ideal for fish and seafood, but also graves-de-vayres, premières-côtes-de-bordeaux, côtes-de-bordeaux and bordeaux, cadillac, haut-benauge, loupiac, sainte-croix-du-mont and saint-macaire… You’re spoilt for choice!
Appellations, grape varieties, blending... For an entertaining insight, Planète Bordeaux is perfect, just 20 minutes from Bordeaux. Five separate rooms tell you all about wine, from the terroir to vinification. You will then be ready to go to Planète Tasting, a convivial tasting session similar in style to speed dating. And there’s even something for the kids!
A rich heritage and lovely scenery. No boasting - the Entre-deux-Mers will amaze you. No sooner have you left a charming village by the riverside than you are at the top of a hill admiring the towers of a castle... Those of Langoiran and Cadillac (which is a lovely fortified town) are well worth seeing. Don’t forget the abbeys of La Sauve-Majeure and Saint-Ferme, Domaine de Malagar, formerly owned by the writer François Mauriac, medieval towns such as Rions or Saint-Macaire... and an astonishing cliff face of fossilised oysters in Sainte-Croix-du-Mont.
Moving on to Créon, where the first "bike resort" is to be found on the Roger Lapébie track, a former railway line converted into a cycling track. Here you can hire a bike, a tandem or equipment to carry your kids... This place makes the Entre-deux-Mers a special region for cycle-tourists. Even the music festival entitled "Ouvre la voix" involves bike rides!
