You might not have heard of Marguerite Donnadieu; this great French writer was better known by the pseudonym she chose in memory of the holidays she spent as a child with her grandparents: Marguerite Duras. Her forename was a flower - a simple, vivacious flower with a heart of gold... just like the wines of the côtes-de-duras appellation. Reds, rosés, dry whites and sweet whites, all brimming over with the sunshine that bathes the hillsides of Lot-et-Garonne and bearing the mark of certain rare grape varieties, such as malbec for the reds or mauzac for the whites.
The region bears testimony to the English presence since the Hundred Years War, for example the name "Guyenne", a mispronunciation of Aquitaine. The wine area prospered in the 12th century, then went through the ages, its wines served at various famous tables... The AOC was made official in 1957.
Duras Castle will take you on a voyage from the Middle Ages through to the 18th century in an entertaining visit. Equipped with an audioguide, you follow in the footsteps of the Count and visit the 35 rooms in the castle, its view over the Dropt Valley, its chamber of secrets... Nearby, the Maison des Vins also offers some nice discoveries with its exhibition called Les Clés du Vignoble, and its Garden of Vines. An original place for a picnic!
Original also best describes the Wine Fête in the village, where you are as likely to bump into a DJ as a member of the wine brotherhood. The festival, called "Faites nuit blanche" (have a sleepless night), is a day of wine tasting and initiation rites, followed by a night of varied shows and concerts.
Around Duras, the central village, 15 other towns and villages boast authentic riches. The charm of the village of Allemans-du-Dropt, the 12th-century murals in the church of Sainte-Colombe-de-Duras, the Romanesque bridge in La-Sauvetat-du-Dropt... Here a mill, there a dovecote... Various circuits are proposed for walks or bike rides.
The Duras area has the advantage of being able to be admired from a hot-air balloon. This fantasy leisure activity has gradually become a special feature of Duras and has now spread to other parts of the region.
