In the land of the famously large-nosed Cyrano, the Bergerac wine area is a poetic place with plenty of character. The generous nature in this part of the Dordogne is revealed in the wines. In this part of the world you will enjoy authentic holidays and encounter heritage, scenery, countrymen and craftsmen. For a gourmet fête or a jazz festival, come and taste the flavours of Périgord.
Located in the southern part of the Dordogne, the Bergerac area is known as "Purple Périgord" due to its big wine industry. It has 12,000 hectares of vines producing 8 different grape varieties - cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec, semillon, muscadelle and chenin blanc - which are blended at wineries to produce 13 sumptuous AOC wines.
Aromas of fruit in bergerac and montravel wines, leather in pécharmant, honey in monbazillac and saussignac… The wines of Purple Périgord are as diverse as the landscapes, with their wooded hillsides, flower-laden fields and lapping rivers, all as enchanting as the accent of the winegrowers you will surely meet.
On foot, by bike or by car, there is the Wine Route that takes you to around a hundred wine estates dotted around the 93 villages in the Bergerac area. The fortified town of Eymet, the Châteaux of Monbazillac and Lanquais... Just follow your nose through the countryside - there is so much to be discovered. And not far away you will find the caves and shelters of the Vézère Valley, taking you back to prehistoric times.
Climb aboard a "gabarre" (traditional boat) and sail down the Dordogne to see the medieval town with its preserved architecture from a different angle. If you’re on foot, the shaded squares and streets with half-timbered houses are ideal for a gentle stroll. The Maison des Vins, in the Cloître des Récollets, will tell you all you need to know about the surrounding wine region.
